Never underestimate a Portuguese granny (or how to win a half marathon aged 60)

Winning a half marathon when you’re 60 years old? Why, yes, it is possible! Portuguese marathon runner Rosa Mota became world famous in 1988, after winning the gold medal in the Seoul Olympic Games, in South Korea. Maybe you remember seeing her in the news with her short skinny physique, broad smile and short hair.

After retiring she continued connected to sports and earlier this month she was in Macau as an anti-doping ambassador in Macau’s 37th International Marathon. In her own words “As I didn’t have any commitments and was free, I decided to run”. Guess what: she won the race!
I believe this is really impressive given not only her age but also the fact that athletes from her generation didn’t have the kind of preparation and equipment athletes have today. You can read more about it in English.
