Like most old towns in Portugal, Marvão has its own (very old) castle.

In this case the original fortification dates back to the 9th century and it was built by Ibn Marwan, a Muladi Sufi from what would later be known as Northern Portugal.

Located in the Northern Alentejo region (Alto Alentejo), at some 860 meters high (roughly 2,820 feet), Marvão has one of the coolest castles in the whole country. Well worth a visit!

Enjoy!—
