Ponte da Barca is a town in the North of Portugal, whose name makes mention of a boat. Besides taking people and goods from one side to the other of the river Lima, it was not uncommon for the boat to carry pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela.

Ponte da Barca is also one of the places that claims to have been the birthplace of Fernão de Magalhães, aka, Ferdinand Magellan, the man who organized the first circumnavigation of the Earth (in the 16th century).
